The New Farmers Market

A couple of weeks ago during lunch my co-worker and friend and I were lamenting our favorite East Coast farmers markets. Nina moved from Philly and loved her various farmers markets as much as I loved my beloved Dupont Farmers Market.

We took a little adventure down to the Dallas Farmers Market which, while different in almost every way was a nice little reminder of local food. Sure, this market is unique in that a lot of stuff isn’t local at all but Nina and I managed to find goodies that were in fact from around Dallas and the surrounding areas. It’s not perfect but it’s better than nothing!

Weekend Headlines

The trend of living life versus blogging it sort of continues ;) This weekend was full of all of the things that make them great – good friends, good food, fun activities, “me” time, and some time in the kitchen. Here are the headlines of this weekend:

- 1st trip to Hill Country BBQ in DC is a Success! Friends celebrated the completion of law school, authentic Texas food and vibe, discovered how allergy friendly they are, and then enjoyed a nice 2 mile stroll home after!

- Retail therapy = the best “me” time. A few hours at the mall, fueled by a delicious egg sandwich was the perfect way to spend the day.

- Don’t get too comfortable yet – allergy threats lurk about! I had dinner at a Vietnamese restaurant before seeing Bridesmaids (which I loved) and ate something with fish in it despite my standard bland / clean order. It was touch and go for a while with a pretty ugly reaction (after only one bite) but plain rice and sorbet helped me rebound so I could see the movie!

- Apparently all of my friends and I spend Sunday mornings at the farmers market. And we don’t coordinate but all go at the same time.

- Don’t window shop and forget to watch the sidewalk. I’ll let the 2 farm fresh eggs I broke be food for thought on how I learned that lesson ;)

- Magazines help time fly by at the gym. I’m loving my Polar heart rate monitor and feel line I’m working out smarter! That also means getting to refuel with yummy things like leftover baked beans, black eyed pea salad, and cucumber salad from Hill Country!

- Quick and Easy Fix for a Mexican Food Craving = combine pinto beans, diced green chiles, and spices. Heat and serve over rice with salsa.

- No one makes cornbread like my mom but the craving struck and I mixed up a batch of muffins a la Gluten Free Pantry’s mix.

What were some of the headlines from your weekend activities?

Presidents’ Day

On Friday I had an interesting conversation with a few colleagues regarding Presidents’ Day. One of the VPs was quizzing some of us younger staff members on the birthdays of some of our nation’s presidents.

What is George Washington’s birthday? What about Abe Lincoln?

His point was that all of the folks in his generation could name those dates with ease and that things have changed for the Millenial generation. Someone remarked those dates could easily be Googled, which I didn’t think helped the case for the younger folks.

Either way, I am thrilled to have the day off, extending my weekend by another beautiful 24 hours. I’m even going to watch a super dorky documentary to honor the day. After embarking upon my adventure on Saturday, I found myself busy with errands, a haircut, gym time, relaxing, and lots of grazing in place of big meals.

I’ve had my standard [as of late] breakfasts

Lots of fruit

These avocado wraps (there were 2, at different meals, and I picked out half the avocado)

And dinner last night was a homemade Chipotle bowl with brown rice, black beans, corn, onion, red bell pepper, and salsa verde.

Of course, there was a trip to the Farmers Market yesterday as well.

If you have the day off, how are you spending it? If you’re working I hope it’s a quiet day!
