The New Farmers Market

A couple of weeks ago during lunch my co-worker and friend and I were lamenting our favorite East Coast farmers markets. Nina moved from Philly and loved her various farmers markets as much as I loved my beloved Dupont Farmers Market.

We took a little adventure down to the Dallas Farmers Market which, while different in almost every way was a nice little reminder of local food. Sure, this market is unique in that a lot of stuff isn’t local at all but Nina and I managed to find goodies that were in fact from around Dallas and the surrounding areas. It’s not perfect but it’s better than nothing!

The Dallas Farmers Market

On Tuesday afternoon my parents and I decided to go do a little bit of exploring on their lunch break. My parents used to take my brother and me down there when we were little for a fun Saturday morning outing. Before this week I couldn’t tell you the last time I was there!

There are 3 main pavilions at the market – 2 are open-air for produce and spice vendors and the other is enclosed with stalls selling everything from tamales, brunch, Italian sausage and handmade pasta to gelato, baked goods, and more! It was pretty quiet when we went but I’d imagine it’s quite energetic on the weekend.

We only walked through one of the open-aired pavilions and I was drooling at the produce. A lot of it was local, there were some entertaining signs, and I spotted beets as big as my head and okra – 2 perks of summer having already arrived in Texas!

It was fun to rediscover this gem at home having become a farmers market enthusiast here in DC. I can’t wait to visit again soon!

Weekend Confessions

I guess I didn’t fully kick my cold because I slept until 10 or 10:30 all weekend long. It was rather glorious!

Saturday’s breakfast was berry warm and comforting! I used 1/4c Bob’s Red Mill GF hot cereal, 1/4c almond milk, 1/2c water, 1/2T chia seeds, cinnamon, maple, 1/4c frozen blueberries, a spoonful of pom arils, and 1/2T almond butter and a crushed honey pecan on top.

I knew I had a busy afternoon / evening yet it took a while to motivate myself to get to the gym. I needed a snack before I got out the door!

I did 65 minutes (6 miles) on the elliptical plus a good 15 minutes of stretches.

I loved the Harry Potter movie. Yes, I went by myself and I laughed, cried, and jumped out of my seat :) I’m also that person that brings a piece of fruit to eat as a snack.

Yesterday morning I was not feeling on my A Game yet battled the cold to get some produce at the farmers market.

I cheated on breakfast knowing I really just wanted lunch. I simply had a fried egg on a slice of Udi’s whole grain bread with red pepper spread.

Sometimes a girl just wants french fries x2. And a delicious salad to accompany it O:-)

The winter blues appear to be creeping in and I’m trying my best to fight them off. Cooking seems to help with that.

Taking baby steps towards a dream can be a big deal.

Despite my best intentions I just had to acknowledge that the gym wasn’t gonna happen.

You can’t go wrong with homemade minestrone soup with garlic toast and half a large pear for dinner and a dough ball for dessert!

Did you do any cooking this past weekend? How do you fight off the winter blues?

Sunday Things

Did you remember to set your clock back an hour last night? I did and still managed to sleep in. #doublewin! Even better, despite my lack of love for winter, my body oddly enough feels back on track. I’m just gonna roll with it ;)

It’s been a pretty typical Sunday thus far. Farmers market, hot cereal breakfast, 3 hours in the kitchen! I finally broke out my new mini-food processor and made a batch of vanilla cinnamon flax cashew butter. Ashley at the Edible Perspective was my inspiration and I followed her tips, including roasting my nuts and adding a glug (or 2) of oil to help form the butter.

My cashew butter contains:

  • 1.5c raw cashews, dry roasted
  • 1/4t sea salt
  • 1/2t cinnamon
  • splashes of vanilla
  • ~1/2T grapeseed oil
  • small pinch of flax seeds

I also cooked up some rice, crackers, and split pea soup for the week

What do your usual “Sunday Things” consist of?
