Bakery on Main Review

A few weeks ago, the wonderful folks at Bakery on Main contacted me asking if I would like to try their gluten free products. I had heard of the company before but had never tried any of their products. This week’s tip – be open to trying new things!

A beautiful package of granola, granola bars, and oatmeal granola bars arrived and I couldn’t wait to taste the goods!

I tore into the granolas first as it’s a food I have never been able to eat before and I absolutely loved it! There was a rich, nutty flavor in each variety and I really enjoyed the different textures from the flax seeds, corn flakes, nuts, and dried fruits. I also really loved it on top of bowls of cream of buckwheat.

Sadly I couldn’t try the oatmeal bars as I cannot tolerate oats but they looked wonderful and I could see chunks of dried apple, chia seeds, and more in each bar! The granola bars were almost as good as the granola itself. Almost. Maybe it was the packaging or the sweeteners? Either way, I would definitely take these on a trip or hiking – they were delicious!

Thanks to the folks at Bakery on Main for sharing their products with me. I now have a granola addiction to fight off :)

Bouncing Back

It’s been a full week since I first got sick and I’m finally starting to feel like my old self! I am planning on heading to the gym for my first workout in well over a week and only have a lingering cough and my prescription to remind me of the fun that last week’s flu and ear infection brought. I am also slowly but surely finding the urge to cook again which feels like a victory!

While I was sick the only thing I had the energy to cook in the morning was a toasted English muffin with PB&J while half an orange for Vitamin C.

In feverish delirium I took what might have been the most random trip to Whole Foods while waiting on a prescription to be filled. Somehow I managed to pick up this little gem of a soup to fill my chicken noodle soup craving.

I picked it over a canned chicken and rice soup because it had 6 ingredients versus the long ingredient list on any can I picked up. The last was delicious as well – exactly what I was craving!

Yesterday I had another “sick” breakfast because of its ease and convenience and decided to treat myself to lunch. I picked up some vegetarian chili from Au Bon Pain which I enjoyed with some baby carrots.

And last night I knew I was finally bouncing back from everything because I had the urge to cook! I didn’t make anything fancy – just some brown rice pasta with white beans and veggies but it was a complete meal!

While the pasta cooked I sauteed 1/4 of an onion in non-stick spray with garlic powder, basil, and oregano. I added in a chopped red bell pepper and 1/2c of frozen white beans (from a big batch I made last month) and a spoonful of tomato sauce. I mixed half of the veggie saute with 3/4c cooked pasta, roasted carrots and broccoli, more sauce, and topped it all with hot red pepper and some Parmesan cheese.

This morning I finally felt like mixing up breakfast and went with a bowl of cream of buckwheat with blueberries mixed in, 1/2T of peanut butter and a pinch of Bakery on Main granola on top.

When you are recovering from being sick, what foods do you start craving that help you know you are starting to feel better?

Lotsa Toppings

Happy Tuesday. How was your day? Time felt like it crawled by a little bit for me but I was able to be productive and take advantage of the day.

Winter was once again upon us when I woke up. My grumbling stomach was ready for breakfast and it was a hot cereal kind of morning. This bowl is half cream of buckwheat and half Mighty GF hot cereal since I used up the last of the buckwheat. On top are blueberries, 2 crushed pecan halves, a few pom arils, 1/2T PB and ~1T of the Maple Bakery on Main Granola.

I loved the crunch of the granola and the flavor – strong notes of maple and not to sweet. As you can see there is a ton of texture!

3 hours later my stomach was rumbling once again and I had some trail mix and Whole O’s, a dried fig, and when that didn’t fill me up, a Fiberful fruit leather with a smidge of peanut butter which did the trick. I’m not sure where that intense snack attack came from but I honored it.

I hit the gym on my lunch break for Total Body Conditioning. After class I cooled down with 15 minutes on the stationary bike (3.05 miles – my legs were tired).

Lunch was a big veggie bowl topped with a serving of Cuban black beans. I also had kale, bell peppers, corn, and broccoli plus a few tortilla chips for crunch.

Snack was 2 clementines and some rice leftover from a meeting.

When I got home I was in the mood to flake out for a bit so I watched 2 episodes of How I Met Your Mother on DVD before my stomach let me know it was once again time to eat. I spotted this recipe for sushi bowls last week and have been craving them since.

I followed the recipe for the sauce and did my own thing for some of the toppings. I sliced and roasted a red bell pepper, sauteed shiitake mushrooms on the stove top in vegetable broth and a dab of teriyaki sauce, and used Trader Joe’s roasted seaweed snacks as my nori.

In addition to all of those toppings I added a fried (in cooking spray) egg, seaweed gomasio, some crushed almond slices, and a [too] heavy dose of sriracha.

I’m currently sipping on hot tea and watching and being inspired by the Biggest Loser to continue the trend of a relaxing night.

What are your favorite sushi fillers / toppings? What about on a bowl of oatmeal or hot cereal? What’s your favorite [morning] snack?

Quiet Valentine

If it wasn’t for people at the office and the extra chocolate everywhere, I might have forgotten about Valentine’s Day yesterday. I’m not one who loves or hates the holiday. Rather, I feel kind of indifferent. I enjoy the chance to let loved ones know that I love and appreciate them and just try to enjoy the day, regardless of my own relationship status.

I was lucky enough to receive a few fun things that made the day special that I think proves that guys aren’t the only ones whose hearts can be accessed through their stomachs!

My parents sent me a beautiful card and a Whole Foods gift card that will surely be put to use. My grandparents also sent me a little something :) While it wasn’t unexpected, my March edition of Vegetarian Times arrived.

I also came home to this unexpected package from the folks at Bakery on Main. They specialize in gluten free granola and bars and I’m looking forward to trying out these products!

How did you spend your Valentine’s Day? Do you love or hate the holiday?
