Once I discovered the beauty that is Casa Oaxaca on the border of Adams Morgan, I instantly became obsessed. They have great happy hour deals, delicious food that you can count on every visit, and I’ve had some great times there. LivingSocial had a deal there and Shelby and I decided we had to have it to enjoy Oaxaca one last time before the big move.
One of the reasons why I love this restaurant – it’s gluten free friendly! There isn’t a separate GF menu but instead they label some items on the menu and all of the staff are extremely familiar with the ingredients of all their dishes and are more than happy to guide you through the menu, noting safe choices.
For our appetizer Shelby and I shared the kekas which we are still talking about 2 weeks later. Each keka was stuffed with different items – one with cheese and asparagus, one with cheese and an onion and bell pepper mixture, and one stuffed with huitlacoche which was a corn / black bean mixture which was divine. It had a smokey, complex flavor that made it the best thing we ate all night.
Shelby got the enmoladas as her entree (not gluten free) which are tortillas folded and soaked in black mole garnished w/ Oaxacan cheese. If you love mole this is perfect for you! Shelby did report it was a lot of mole for one person but absolutely delicious nonetheless.
I’m glad that I was able to enjoy Casa Oaxaca one last time and I already know I’ll be back when I come to visit DC!
