Myself According to Others

I had a pretty eye-opening day today for a few reasons. I might allude to this every so often on Twitter and even here on the blog but I’m exploring what feels like Phase II of my quarter life crisis (Phase I happened when I turned 24 and this blog was a result of that part!). I’m owning it though and trying to let life soak in even if it feels surreal.

Today I had the opportunity to see myself how some others’ [might] see me and while that sounds a little conceited I learned a lot in reflecting on those experiences and am feeling good.

It all started this morning. I had my usual breakfast – half a pear and some pineapple and an English muffin with peanut butter on one half and an egg white on the other.

I had the pleasure of lunching with a Twitter friend who I am proud to now call an In Real Life friend. We talked about everything from food to Southern accents to life and things in between. I felt like I got some great feedback on an idea I shared and saw it though a fresh perspective which was really welcomed. I definitely enjoyed that break in my day!

The afternoon went smoothly. I snacked on some more Glutino pretzels and an apple before hitting the gym after work.

I surprisingly wasn’t sore from my class yesterday so I got in a decent workout without fatiguing my legs too much. 3.4 miles on the elliptical followed by 20 minutes on the bike and then it was time to race home. Tonight kicked off free yoga in Dupont Circle and I planned to meet a friend for class which I used as my cool down and stretching time. The 60 minute class loosened my muscles and felt great. It also seemed like we were the object of peoples’ interest with folks watching us do our poses, taking pictures, and more! I imagine those folks thought we were really into yoga or confident to do lots of poses in a busy urban park. With a clear blue sky and perfect temps, it was the best way to spent a spring evening!

I started a pot of rice as soon as I got home and ate dinner in reverse order while waiting for it to cook. I started with a serving of baked beans and half a pear and ended up with more BBQ pulled chicken and a serving of brown rice pilaf with carrots, broccoli, and onion.

I’m tired after all the activity today but will sleep easy knowing I got a little more clarity during this crazy month!

Do you ever stop and consider how others’ may perceive you?

Dish Pan Hands

Would you believe that in the last 24 hours I have done the dishes 4 different times? For someone who doesn’t have a dishwasher, that’s quite the load! It also means that I’ve been cooking up a variety of things and really am feeling like my old self, cooking wise.

What haveĀ  I been making? Well, yesterday I started off cooking up my first recipe from Eat, Drink & Be Vegan – Hide the Lentil Tomato Sauce. It’s a published recipe that I followed to a T besides adding in chopped onion. While I can’t type up the recipe for you I will say this – I was ready to return the cookbook until I tasted this tomato sauce and then proceeded to have it for a snack and dinner yesterday as well as lunch today over about 1/2c brown rice pasta with some broccoli and bell peppers mixed in.

This morning I had an egg white sandwich on 2 slices of Udi’s whole grain bread with red pepper spread and some cheddar cheese. I also had a few strawberries and a quarter of a grapefruit on the side.

This didn’t hold me over well at all and I broke into my afternoon snack – an apple with peanut butter, earlier than I had planned to. Lunch was a simple greens salad with a sprinkle of Parmesan and the aforementioned pasta.

This afternoon some colleagues popped some popcorn and were kind enough to share. I had maybe a cup and a half before I left for the day. When I did I was quite hungry and had a piece of toast with cheese before a 6:30pm yoga class.

Tonight’s vinyasa flow class was my new class of the month and I really liked it. It was fast paced, stretched my tired legs, and we did handstand work! I was easily able to do a handstand from my gymnastics days and was thrilled. I actually ran to and from the gym so I got an unexpected cardio workout in as well.

I debated what to make for dinner and finally decided on Kath’s Spring Greens Soup which was delicious. I omitted the butter, croutons, and doubled the broth and greens and now have extra for lunches this week. I also had some beans on the side for protein.

I just finished munching a bit of plain popcorn and now it’s off to bed.

Have you cooked up anything good lately?

I’m Practicing For…

This morning I slept inĀ  yet discovered that I would have enough time to make it to yoga at my new gym. Win! I could try out my first class since I broke my foot and keep myself on track to meet my November goals! I grabbed a quick slice of toast and was out the door.

Yoga was really good. It was challenging at times. I stretched in ways I haven’t for the past 7 months and my body thanked me immediately. I couldn’t lay still for savasana but that has always been my weakness so I wasn’t surprised. All-in-all, it feels good to be back!

I headed over to Whole Foods afterward for some groceries. While I was shopping I bumped into a girl who was newly diagnosed with Celiac disease and spent some time talking with her and her parents. It was definitely an unexpected encounter but I was happy to help out someone new to gluten free eating and get some practice for my dream business.

Lunch was quick and easy as I was famished by the time I got home. My body is not used to running on a breakfast of simply a piece of toast! I had a salad with romaine, spinach, sun-dried tomatoes, and almonds and a serving of Amy’s black bean soup with some hot sauce and a few Food Should Taste Good olive chips.

It’s been a lazy afternoon of football, some cleaning, and good movies on TV.

Last night was another opportunity for practice, but this time for Thanksgiving at home! I met Fred (aka BFF Lauren) for Skinny Girl Margaritas for happy hour. We had lots to catch up on and a couple of things to celebrate. We soon realized it was past 7pm and we were ready for dinner. Enter: Mexicali Blues.

We stared with the chips and salsa but didn’t do too much damage on it.

I got the spinach enchiladas, no cheese, with black beans and rice. I ate one full enchilada, the stuffing from the other too plus the beans and lettuce.

Earlier in the day I ate the last of my Sloppy Joe’s alongside a salad with roasted beets.

And breakfast was the usual mix of Bob’s Red Mill hot cereal with blueberries, 1/2T peanut butter, and fig jam sauce (heated jam with a splash of maple).

Not sure what else is on tap for the day. I’m babysitting tonight and am debating what to do with myself until then.

Are you practicing for anything? Does practice really make perfect? :)
